S1 Hackathon at The Scottish Parliament
A dressCode hackathon was hosted at Scottish Parliament to mark the launch of the Scottish Parliament’s Education Skills Committee report on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) learning. This involved 50 S1 girls from Scottish schools from five different councils who were tasked with creating digital visuals using code based on one of the recommendations from the report. The schools invited were St.Kentigern’s Academy, Newbattle High School, Holy Rood RC, Biggar High School and John Paul Academy.
dressCode is a Scottish non-profit charity, which aims to encourage more girls to engage with Computing Science and help close the gender gap. The hackathon’s theme focused on the findings of the report, which highlighted the difficulties around addressing the gender gap in STEM, the issues with schools in rural areas not being able to access events, and areas of high levels of deprivation not being involved in STEM initiatives.
Our students were a credit to themselves and the school and one of our two teams won second prize for their work! Click here to have a look at all the teams’ final pieces!
